Every year, the United Nations (UN) marks the International Day of Peace on 21 September. It was first declared 43 years ago as a shared date for the world to build a culture of peace.
In Darwin the United Nations Association of Australia NT celebrated the day by acknowledging the legacy left by Japanese family, the Fujita's in the years following World War II.
The day was marked with the releasing of white bouganvillea flowers in the peace garden at the Uniting Church in Smith Street, which holds much of the memorabilia of the Fujita family's time in the NT.
Ludmilla Primary School students took part in the commemorations, making peace doves and planting them in the peace garden.
